Not so Good
- Only Worth It If You Have A Wireless AC Router
802.11ac is still a new technology, and isn’t officially a standard, yet. Because of it’s youthfulness, there aren’t that many Wireless AC bridges out there to choose from. Western Digital have released the WD My Net AC Bridge WDBMRD0000NBL-HESN to try to exploit this gap. They haven’t done a bad job either, particularly when it comes to HD streaming. In the past, we all had to make do with Wireless N for streaming, which was OK for standard definition, but was too unreliable when it came to HD. We always had problems with dropouts – so frequent, that watching movies were pretty much a no-go.
The 5GHz frequency has it’s limitations with coverage, and isn’t fantastic with multiple obstacles, so owners in big houses should consider this before purchasing.
The WPS feature makes pairing very easy indeed – you should be up and running with the basics in about 2 minutes. Amongst other features – the security is provided using WPA 2 or WPA and there is the option of IPv6 functionality.
If you don’t want to cable your devices around the home, or they don’t have Wireless AC built in, then the WD My Net AC Bridge could be the way to go…
