Linksys EA6200 AC900 Review

The Linksys EA6200 AC900 router is the ‘baby’ in Linksys’s Wireless AC range. With data rates of 867Mbps on the 5GHz AC and 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz Wireless N, it’s not as fast as it’s big brothers.

But some people don’t necessarily need the fastest speeds going and are happy with an ‘all-rounder’ of good stability, useful features as well as the relatively fast speeds – and this is the market Linksys are aiming at with the EA6200. Let’s press on with a rundown of the features and list what’s good and bad about them…

7 Features of the Linksys EA6200

Wireless AC On A Budget
802.11ac routers can still be quite pricey. The EA6200 falls within the budget end of Wireless AC routers, but still delivering wireless speeds up to 865Mbps theoretical. Wireless AC is the technology that we will all use as Wireless N is phased out. With the EA6200, Linksys are offering the newest technology for users with lower budgets.

5GHz & 2.4GHz Simultaneous
Simultaneous Dual Band allows users on both 2.4 & 5GHz frequency bands to share the wireless network at the same time. Most wireless devices use 2.4GHz, which has made this band congested. With Dual Band, you can use the releatively uncongested 5GHz as well – offering you the ability to balance who and what uses each band.

It is best recommended to use the 2.4GHz band for less intensive tasks, like browsing the Internet and email. The 5GHz band is best used with bandwidth sensitive and thirsty applications, like VoIP, video streaming and jitter-sensitive online gaming.

Coupled with Quality of Service, the EA6200 AC900 aims to provide the best online & wireless experience possible.

DLNA
DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) makes for easy sharing of media with other DLNA compatible hardware around your home – including games consoles, TV’s and home cinema systems. The Linksys EA6200 has a built-in DLNA media server so you can share files centrally.

USB 3.0 Port
Working in conjunction with DLNA, the USB port can be used to plug in your USB drive. This means music and video files are stored in one place that can be accessed around the home at any time. You can also plug in a USB printer making centralized printing possible.

4x Gbps LAN Ports
With four gigabit LAN ports, your wired Ethernet network nodes will have fast access to the network without fear of bottleneck or congestion.

WPA2 Wireless Security
Your wireless data is fully protected with WPA2 wireless security. There is also WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) so you can pair WPS compatible devices to the EA6200 with ease.

Linksys Smart Wi-Fi
With a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account, you can manage your router remotely or internally using a tablet or smartphone.

Hovering around the $100 – $120 range (at time of writing), the Linksys EA6200 is among the group of cheaper .11ac routers. We have now entered the phase of AC routers being affordable for everyone. With the EA6200’s list of features and relatively fast AC speeds, this router is one to think about…along with the Asus’s and Netgear budget routers of this world.

  2. All of the above is true , but not mentioned is the one thing that ruins this device , its cloud management portal. It is so frustrating and non-commonsensical. Set the thing up öffline”just the way you want it then connect to the internet it will undo all your good work and work the way it wants to. Seems like no way to turn this off at all so YOU can operate the thing. Ended up not having it connected through its internet port at all so get around that. Of course this reduced the things utility but at least I could get through to the internet on my terms.
