Linksys E8350 AC2400 Review

The Linksys E8350 AC2400 Wireless AC router is one of two new routers (the other is the Linksys EA9200 AC3200 Tri-Band router) to be released from the Linksys (formerly owned by Cisco – now Belkin) stable.

Featuring 4 spatial streams and with MU-MIMO on standby, Linksys have released a router that is in direct competition with the Asus RT-AC87U which was reviewed recently.

Without further ado, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of what the E8350 has up it’s sleeve…

Linksys E8350 AC2400 Features

Four spatial streams and Mu-MIMO are only part of the attraction of this router…

7 Features of the Linksys E8350 AC2400

Mighty Wireless AC
Wireless AC is a “must have” for the heavy Wi-Fi users out there. Whether it be for online gaming playing the latest FPS, or streaming HD videos around the home, 802.11ac is a necessity. The Linksys E8350 has been unleashed onto the world to satisfy the gamers and video streamers alike.
So what is it capable of? Well, the data rates are 1.73Gbps on the 5GHz Wireless AC, and a further 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. That makes a total of 2.4Gbps (hence the AC2400) in total. Not too shabby, I’m sure you’ll agree!

4x Spatial Streams & MU-MIMO Ready
The E8350 is one of the Next Generation (apologies Star Trek fans!) routers that utilizes 4 spatial streams as opposed to just 3. Each spatial stream can carry huge chunks of data to different users concurrently when used in conjunction with MU-MIMO.
Original MIMO is the revolutionary technology that transforms reflected wireless signals into one healthy stream, again improving throughput. It’s been around for a while (from the Wireless N days, but would only work for one wireless client at a time. MU-MIMO, which stands for Multi-User – Multiple In Multiple Out, uses the MIMO standard for more than one client simultaneously, basically improving throughput for all the wireless clients. MU-MIMO will be usable in a future download update.

1.4GHz Dual Core CPU
With a 1.4GHz dual core processor, there’s no need to worry about the E8350 struggling to keep up the pace. While you download from the Internet, stream TV programs from your attached USB drive, or play online games, the E8350 has the hardware to cope with anything that you throw at it.

Get Better Coverage with Beamforming
The E8350 AC2400 has Beamforming enabled, which intensifies Wi-Fi coverage in the direction of your wireless clients as and when they need it. Because of this focused signal, your clients can roam further away from the E8350 while receiving a stronger signal. This also helps keep reliable connections as the chances of drops lessen due to increased signal at greater distances.

Adjustable Antennas
4 adjustable antennas are available to be….err….adjusted. Useful if you live in a multi-story house, because you can angle the wireless beamwidth in the direction of the rooms in the home that are vertical from where the router will be positioned.
If you want to fit your own antennas, you can do so as the shipped antennas can be removed.

eSATA & USB 3.0
Remember earlier we were talking about streaming HD video around the home? Well, that’s where the attached storage ports come in. With the choice of plugging in a drive into either a USB 3.0 or an eSATA port (or even a USB 2.0 port), you can access all your files, data and movies from one location. No point wasting electricity firing up another device to share with when the router is on all the time anyway!

Gigabit LAN & WAN Ports
Plug the E8350 AC2400 into a modem that supports up to 1Gbps. The same goes for any cabled Ethernet devices you may use. 4x 1Gbps LAN ports are there to be used.
