D-Link DGL-5500 AC1300 Wireless AC Gaming Router Features
StreamBoost is an advanced form of QoS which pushes non-online gaming traffic data types to the background whenever you need to – when you are playing games. The most important factor when playing online games is making sure that you have lower latency and less jitter. Increased amounts of latency and jitter can introduce what we all infamously know as ‘lag’.
Other users on your network may be congesting your bandwidth by downloading files, or streaming (particularly HD, which can be particularly bandwidth intensive). When this happens, latency increases, which affects your gaming performance, giving your gaming competitors the edge over you.
There is a cure…
With StreamBoost, the D-Link DGL-5500 AC1300 Wireless AC Gaming Router automatically and dynamically protects your gaming traffic to keep latency to a minimum and jitter levels lower. This can be the difference between you fragging your competitor in a First Person Shooter, rather than you ending up as the victim every time.
The D-Link DGL-5500 AC1300 Wireless AC Gaming Router updates features from the Cloud. With regular automated updates, the DGL-5500 makes sure your games-playing traffic always stays ahead of the rest.
Let the online community help to preserve your precious gaming traffic even more with the crowd-sourced profile creation system.
Keep your gaming traffic on 5GHz and all the other traffic on the overused 2.4GHz. Another way of keeping your games traffic ‘king’.
Share a printer or a USB drive around the home. Using USB 3.0 speeds you can enjoy streaming movies, music or printing from one central location.

D-Link DGL-5500 AC1300 Wireless AC Gaming Router Conclusion
- Super-Fast Gaming
- Setup Is Easy
- Excellent Wireless Coverage
Not so Good
- Power Cable A Little Short
Although the DGL-5500 is a good wireless gaming router for the money, it’s always preferable to use an Ethernet cable where possible. This is always going to be the case using Wi-Fi due to the technical limitations and protocol overhead that comes with wireless technology.
Wireless is half-duplex as opposed to Ethernet’s full-duplex technology – so it’s always going to be second best. Having said that, if you are unable to run a cable to the D-Link DGL-5500, the wireless method should be a big improvement over other routers in this price range. Just make sure that you choose 5GHz for gaming – it’s much better than the 2.4GHz solution.
Aside from gaming, the wireless coverage is pretty good – on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz. The D-Link DGL-5500 AC1300 is very easy to set up and non-gaming features are varied. D-Link have very wisely incorporated a USB 3.0 port for centralized sharing and printing.
Quality of Service is easy to configure, and should be tweaked for your games, especially if you have other router users in your home. You really don’t want them hogging your bandwidth and impacting your gaming experience.
One thing you may not like…the power cable is pretty short. This means you may not be able to place the router exactly where you want, without using a separate power extension cable.
In essence, the D-Link DGL-5500 AC1300 Wireless AC Gaming Router is one to consider your home if you’re a regular games player.
