Can I Change Alexa’s Name On Amazon Echo And Dot And How Do I Do It?

Can I Change Alexas Name - And How Do I Do It?

So, you’ve bought an Amazon Echo or Dot. Everything is going well.

You have managed to avoid making any unwanted purchases, and so far there have been no annoying alarms going off in the middle of the night.

However, this was until you found out that your Auntie Alexa is coming to stay for the weekend. Now every time you talk to her your Echo starts to turn on and tries to listen out for instructions. Obviously, not ideal. Alexa (not your auntie) is going to have a hard time frying you a couple of eggs, sunny side up (it sure could give you plenty of recipes though!).

If this is happening to you, you will likely be wondering if there is anything you do in this kind of situation.

Luckily, there is! Amazon have provided the option to change the "Wake Word" (the name) for your Echo or Dot.

To find out how to do this, please read on.

Can I Change Alexa’s Name?

Yes!

However, the options are limited. You can’t choose any name that you want at the moment and in fact, you can only choose from:

  • "Alexa"
  • "Echo"
  • "Amazon"
  • "Computer"

While these aren’t the most exciting names and none have the personal touch of the name “Alexa”, they are enough to avoid confusion if you happen to have someone called Alexa in your household.

If you have named your children Echo, Amazon, or Computer however, then you may still be in trouble!

Why Change The Wake Up Word?

The most obvious reason would be if you have someone in your family, or someone who often stays at your house, with the name Alexa. If you find that you are constantly setting your Amazon Echo off by accident then naturally you are going to want to change the name it responds to.

While in this situation you are unlikely to accidentally buy something, or set an alarm for the middle of the night, it can be annoying to constantly have Alexa turn on and say “I don’t understand”.

This could also affect your Alexa if your favourite TV show has a character named Alexa.

Another reason is that if you have two Amazon Echo/Dots in rooms that are close to each other you find that you sometimes set off the wrong speaker when you say the wake up word.

If this is the case, changing the wakeup word on one of the devices is a good way to stop this from happening. Just be sure to remember which word you assigned to each product.

Ok, So How Do I Change Alexa’s Name?

Changing the wake up name of your Alexa product is very easy and can be done either using the app or online.

Simply follow these steps:

1. Open either the Amazon Alexa app or go to alexa.amazon.com. You should log into your account if you haven’t already.

2. Click on ‘Settings’.

3. Choose the Echo that you want to change.

4. Click on ‘Wake Word’.

5. Select the word that you want to choose as your wake word. Either Alexa, Echo, Amazon, or Computer.

6. Save your settings.

Now when you want to talk to your Amazon Echo, you simply need to use the new wake up word instead of the word ‘Alexa’. Everything else about the product will stay the same.

Hopefully, you now know how to change the wake-up word on your Amazon Echo. If you have found this article useful, please share on social media. If you have any more questions, please ask in the comments section below.
