Black Friday 101

What Is Black Friday?

The day that you hopefully pick up a bargain at the stores.

You’ll have no doubt heard of it. Black Friday has soared in popularity over the last few years. Although January and Holiday season sales are still popular, the general public have now come to expect good deals on Black Friday too. In fact, it’s arguably become more “in vogue”.

It’s nice to be able to pick up a bargain before Christmas, than after. Cheaper gifts for you loved ones (and yourself of course!).

Why Is It Called “Black Friday”?

There’s no real answer to this, but according to gold ol’ Wikipedia, it’s in reference to workers who would call in to work sick, due to overindulgence on Thanksgiving the day before.

But, then if you look further afield, the name refers to traffic congestion, due to shoppers hitting the streets. Another possible explanation refers to when retailers finally make a profit for the year (moving, in financial terms, from red to “black”)

Anyway, all you need to know is that it’s a day that you will hopefully find some bargains in the stores.

When Is Black Friday 2019 (what day/date)?

Friday 29th November 2019

As always, the day after Thanksgiving day in the US. If you have Black Friday in your country (UK, Canada or Australia etc) it will also be the same day.

Note that in the last handful of years, some retailers have started offering deals in the days preceding Thanksgiving. So keep your eyes peeled before the big day, in case a limited offer is available that special router that you wanted.

Cyber Monday 101

What Is Cyber Monday? Is It Different From Black Friday?

This is a more recent marketing creation.

It is focused on the technology market. However, don’t assume that “Monday” offers better discounts than “Friday”, or that there are more offers. This isn’t necessarily the case, and we recommend checking out the offers for both days (they fall 3 days apart from each other.)

Why Is It Called “Cyber Monday”?

So where did the name Cyber Monday come from?

How Stuff Works claims the term originates from the mid-2000s, by the marketing team at shop.org

When Is Cyber Monday 2019 (on what day/date)?

Monday 2nd December, 2019

Cyber Monday always falls the Monday after Black Friday. It’s often just a continuation of the Friday sales, but focussing more on tech than any other products. The pattern does seem to be changing though as the years pass by.
